David Ogilvy is often know as the father of advertising, one of his first forays into advertising was to use postcards for direct selling and later on he became the genius behind the Dove advertising slogan

"Only Dove is one-quarter moisturizing cream".

He has written a book "Ogilvy on Advertising" which is a general commentary on advertising . In early 2004, Adweek magazine asked people in the business "Which individuals - alive or dead - made you consider pursuing a career in advertising?" and Ogilvy topped the list. His best-selling book Confessions of an Advertising Man is one of the most popular and famous books on advertising.

Ogilvy's advertising mantra followed these four basic principles,

  • Research: coming, as he did, from a background in research, he never underestimated its importance in advertising. In fact, in 1952, when he opened his own agency, he billed himself as research director.
  • Professional discipline: "I prefer the discipline of knowledge to the anarchy of ignorance." He codified knowledge into slide and film presentations he called Magic Lanterns. He also instituted several training programs for young advertising professionals.
  • Creative brilliance: had a strong emphasis on the "BIG IDEA."
  • Results for clients: "In the modern world of business, it is useless to be a creative, original thinker unless you can also sell what you create."

Advertising is essential for any business, and like every area of business you need to establish a plan about what you want to accomplish.

You need to be as precise as you can as to why you are advertising and what you want to achieve. Everyone wants advertising to increase business, but for your advertising plan to work it requires you to be more precise. Below are some suggested goals for your advertising:

  • Increase awareness of your business.
  • Attract competitors' customers.
  • Increase the likelihood of keeping current customers and developing their loyalty.
  • Generate immediate sales or sales leads.
You may want your advertising to achieve all of these goals plus some others. What is important is that you prioritise your goals. Advertising works best when it is developed to meet one specific goal at a time.

You need to understand who you are advertising to when marketing your business. Once you determine your advertising goals you can then select the target audience for your message. Advertising that tries to reach "everyone" rarely succeeds. Remember successful advertising is written with a specific customer in mind.

Backlinking is a very important part of marketing your business. The most valuable backlinks are from sites which have a low Alexa ranking or a high page rank, but getting links from this kind of site can be difficult. One of the rules for backlinking is to ensure the anchor text contains the keyword or keyword phrase which can also be found on the site you are marketing.

The page or site you are backlinking from must also be relevant to the subject of your link. It is also preferable to have only an inward link to your site rather than reciprocal links. the more links that come into your site the more authoritive you business becomes, so how do you set about building backlinks.

To jump start marketing your business I suggest following a proven strategy of building 500 single webpages and 1000 classified ads, now this may sound like a lot of work. You may ask yourself what will you write about, the answer is about your business. If you cannot write about your business and what you are selling, how are you expecting people to purchase your goods or services.

I use a free webpages site, which carried no advertising, where you just need to fill in a template, you do not even need to have knowledge of HTML or website design, just type in content about 300-500 words. The site itself has an Alexa Ranking around 204 thousand and is frequented by search engine robots.

I place classified ads on 1 family Classifieds one of the oldest classified sites on the Internet with an Alexa ranking of 110 thousand. Here is an important note your advertisement needs to be written as a short keyword specific article for search engines rather than human readers, so no fancy colours, pictures etc.

Following on from yesterdays article on business leads I received an email from someone in the USA, who had recently joined an MLM business.

Now there is nothing basically wrong with an MLM business, however teaching people to try and involve friends and family is likely to turn more people off instead of jump starting a business. The company concerned seems to concentrate on face to face gatherings very much like Amway (I used to be a member many years ago until I moved to Cyprus) which is fine if you know a lot of people. Modern day living however often means you do not even know your neighbours, so how do you set about building the List than MLM representatives suggest.

You need to carry out some research on the products you are selling. lets say for instance its a weight loss product, which is a huge market but also very competitive. Maybe your product has some unique ingredient, which you can exploit in your marketing campaign. You need to learn about the product and your competitors.

Armed with this information, the next step is to formulate a list of keywords and build a simple lead capture page together with a series of emails explaining all about your product.

The final step is to advertise you new site, this is perhaps the hardest part, as you need to get into the habit of writing short articles of interest on the subject of weight loss in this case on a daily basis.

Where do you get your business leads from, now some people buy them which frankly is a big mistake as you do not know the source, many people sell lists but unless you know how people came to be added to the list the chances are that all you will do is waste your money.

The best source of business leads is to develop your own and you can do this is a variety of ways offering free services or products. the quality of the lead will depend on what it is you are actually providing for free, for example offering a free computer will attract a lot of people wanting a computer, however if you are providing a subscription to as series of articles about "marketing your business" you are more likely to attract business entrepreneurs who are seeking information this will require a subscription type box to capture information such as:

A person who signs up for a subscription can then be sent a series of articles over the following days and weeks. You need of course to ensure that subscribers have away to unsubscribe at any time.

Many people build large lists of leads but forget to communicate with them, the older the leads the harder it will be to build up a relationship with them. there is nothing wrong with having a large list but you must keep it active. A dormant list is not good for marketing your business.

This was a pleasant a surprise, you could not ask for a better trend. The time frame covers the period when Veretekk is being upgraded and improved prior to the launch of version 2. It would seem that an increasing number of people are interesting in discovering how to use some of the many new tools that are steadily being introduced.

Only today I received advance information of the launch of an in house WYSIWYG editor to help people who do not understand HTML to produce good content in articles blogs and email. The previous update earlier this week was a time saving leads management system to mange the hundreds of leads which the system can produce.
